Isle of Skye from Inverness: Private Day Tour

Discover the Isle of Skye on a private day tour from Inverness, designed entirely around your interests and travel style. This is not a fixed route or a one-size-fits-all schedule. Each itinerary is carefully planned in advance, allowing you to focus on what matters most to you - whether that’s dramatic landscapes, local history, photography, or whisky.

Skye Tour Example Route

While every tour is individually designed, a typical Skye day from Inverness often begins along the shores of Loch Ness, then heads west through the striking mountain scenery of Glen Shiel and Kintail, widely regarded as one of the most scenic drives in the Highlands.

On the way to Skye, we typically pause at Eilean Donan Castle and at Sligachan Old Bridge beneath the Black Cuillin. Once on the island, you might choose to walk to the clear pools and waterfalls of the Fairy Pools, or explore a different corner of Skye, depending on your interests. The village of Carbost makes a convenient lunch stop and is home to Talisker Distillery, where tastings overlook Loch Harport.

The afternoon is often spent exploring the dramatic landscapes of the Trotternish Peninsula, including landmarks such as the Old Man of Storr, the Quiraing, and Kilt Rock. Before leaving Skye, we usually stop in the harbour town of Portree, returning to Inverness via Achnasheen through the open landscapes of Wester Ross.

We would always prefer to show you more of Skye - realistically, the island deserves two or three days - but on a one-day private tour from Inverness, we do need to be selective and maintain a steady pace.

You’ll can find more information our prices page, but here’s a quick overview of what you can expect on this Skye day tour from Inverness:

Price:

From £650, depending on route, optional activities, and car type.

Maximum people:

Ideal for small groups of 1 to 4 people. A minibus can be arranged at an additional cost.

Tour Duration & Start Time:

Due to the distance involved, this is an extended 11-hour experience, typically running from 8:30am to 7:30pm. The driving time is approximately 7 hours, leaving around 4 hours to explore Skye itself.

The journey forms a significant part of the day, with some of the Highlands’ most impressive scenery unfolding along the route to and from the island.

Optional detours / Variations / Excursions:

We can discuss adding the following options to your Skye day tour. Some options will require a faster travel pace:

  • Duntulm loop: the loop around the top of the Trotternish Loop is super scenic, but it takes a while and will limit what you can see on the rest of the island.

  • Plockton: possibly the most stunning seaside village in Scotland. With its palm trees and stunning bay, it’s known as the “Jewel of the Highlands”.

  • Skye turntable ferry: we could take the old turntable ferry onto Skye via Glenelg village & the Mam Ratagan Pass (£20+).

Food & drink:

The foodie scene on Skye is phenomenal. They have everything from locally caught seafood to quaint cafes serving local produce, coffee roasteries, whisky distilleries and breweries. Once we have a firm itinerary, we’ll give you lunch & cafe options.

Here’s a selection of our recommendations: Café Cùil, The Oyster Shed, Birch, Caora Dhubh, Lean To Coffee, Cuillin Hills Hotel, The Hungry Gull, Flodigarry Hotel, YURTea & coffee & The Dunvegan.

Tour Information:

  • Please wear appropriate outdoor clothing and footwear as it’s likely to be wet and windy, plus the ground can be muddy and uneven.

  • Quite a few cafes and attractions on Skye are closed on Monday & Tuesday. These aren’t the best days to visit Skye, but we can work around the closures.

  • Your driver/guide is a Mountain Leader, which means they are qualified and insured to accompany you on walks and hikes.

  • Unfortunately, there isn’t enough time on a Skye day tour for long hikes or excursions, such as a walk to Loch Coruisk from Elgol. If you’d like to experience more of Skye at a relaxed pace and enjoy a few hikes, we recommend at least two days on Skye with our multi-day tours. Accommodation is limited on Skye, especially at short notice.
