West Coast Scotland

This complete guide to Scotland’s West Coast brings together ready-to-follow itineraries, day trip ideas, overnight stops, and the very best places to eat, drink, and stay.

How to visit the West Coast

One of my favourite regions in Scotland, the West Coast is a place I return to time and time again.

This is a land of dramatic and unforgettable scenery: wild beaches, towering mountains, rocky shorelines, countless islands, atmospheric castle ruins, magnificent sunsets, winding roads, and ferry-hopping adventures that lead to some of the country's most spectacular views.

All of which is to say that the West Coast covers a vast and wonderfully diverse corner of Scotland.

It stretches from the seafood hotspots of Argyll to charming towns like Ullapool and Plcokton, the islands of Skye and Mull, the wild northern coastline that forms part of the NC500, and iconic locations such as Glencoe and Glenfinnan.

Yet even that only scratches the surface. Beyond the headline destinations lie countless villages, hidden beaches, island communities, and quiet corners waiting to be discovered - places that reward those willing to slow down and explore.

West Coast Guides

What many visitors don't realise is quite how immense the region is. Thanks to its intricate coastline, sea lochs, and countless peninsulas, it stretches for hundreds of miles, and as we’ve learnt the hard way, attempting to see everything in a single trip is simply impossible.

Instead, the most rewarding West Coast itineraries focus on one or two areas, allowing time to slow down, explore properly, and discover the unique character that makes each corner of the coast so special.

This guide brings together picturesque villages, boutique hotels, exceptional seafood cafes and restaurants, and the best bases for exploring the coast.
