Dornoch Beach: Coastal Walks, Golden Sands & Where to Stay

Dornoch

Dornoch Beach is widely considered one of the most beautiful beaches on Scotland’s east coast - and once you see it, it’s easy to understand why. Just a short walk from the centre of town, it opens out into a long stretch of golden sand that’s perfect for leisurely walks along the water.

Backed by dunes and the iconic golf club, the sand is soft underfoot, the shoreline curves gently along the coast, and even on bright days it rarely feels crowded.

The shallow waters make it a great option for families, while the beach is equally well-suited for dog walkers and longer coastal strolls. From here, you can continue towards Embo Beach or join sections of the coastal path that form part of the longer John O’Groats Trail.

We’d been looking for something a little more challenging on our last visit, and ended up continuing past Embo all the way to Golspie (around seven hours), before catching the local bus back. It’s a longer day, but a rewarding one - with wide, open views towards the Sutherland hills, back across to Dornoch, and out to the Tarbat Ness lighthouse across the firth.

For food, there are several excellent options just a short walk back in town, but we nearly always find ourselves at Highland Larder, a relaxed beachside spot serving generous haddock wraps and crisp, golden fries, perfect after a long walk.

Where to Stay Near Dornoch Beach

If you’re looking to stay as close to the beach as possible, Links House at Royal Dornoch is easily the standout. Tucked just behind the dunes and overlooking the golf course, it’s one of those places that feels quietly luxurious without ever being overdone.

I’ve always thought it suits Dornoch perfectly. Rooms are spacious and understated, with soft, coastal tones and just enough detail to feel special without trying too hard. It’s the kind of place where you can step out in the morning and be on the beach within minutes, then return to something warm and comfortable after a long walk.

Even if you’re not staying, it’s worth knowing about — whether for a special occasion, a slower-paced stay, or simply somewhere that lets you fully lean into the rhythm of this part of the coast.

Dornoch Beach Essentials

If you’re staying in town, Dornoch Beach is an easy 15-minute walk from the centre. I tend to take the route along Golf Road - it’s the most direct, though it does cross the golf course, so it’s worth being mindful of play as you go. If you’re driving, there’s a large paid car park right by the beach, making access straightforward.

Facilities are limited, but there are public toilets on site, Highland Larder for afternoon light bites and drinks, and the new clubhouse-restaurant by the golf course.
