The Best Boutique Hotels In Dundee, Scotland
I can find endless reasons to visit Dundee, one of my favourite Scottish cities. Over the years, I’ve visited on couples’ getaways, weekends away with friends, solo trips, and even to host a retreat - and in that time, I’ve stayed in many of the hotels across the city.
So if you’re wondering where to stay in Dundee, these are the places I’d personally recommend.
Over the last few years, Dundee has quietly transformed into one of Scotland’s coolest small cities. The place I remember visiting as a teenager for family day trips now feels filled with artisan coffee shops, excellent independent restaurants, creative spaces, and a growing collection of genuinely stylish hotels.
It’s a city layered with history and culture, from its industrial heritage to its waterfront revival, and somewhere that deserves far more attention from travellers exploring Scotland. Whether you’re stopping for a night on a road trip or planning a slower city break, Dundee has some brilliant places to stay.
Where to stay in Dundee
Here’s my rapid-fire guide to where to stay depending on your group and style, for both hotels and apartments. For a first-time visit, I recommend staying central near the quayside or promenade so you can walk to everything.
Below this list, I’ve included more options and details on each.
Apex City Quay Hotel & Spa: best for waterfront views, spa facilities, and spacious modern rooms.
Hotel Indigo Dundee: best for boutique interiors, a historic setting, and an excellent restaurant.
Staybridge Suites: best for longer stays, apartment-style living, and amenities.
The Clarendon: best for a smaller, design-led stay with a more personal feel.
Staying in Dundee
Here’s the thing - while Dundee makes a fantastic day trip, we actually think it’s even better as an overnight getaway. There’s enough here to fill a full weekend between the museums, coffee shops, waterfront walks, restaurants, and nearby coastal villages. You can read more in our Dundee weekend itinerary, but if your schedule allows it, we’d absolutely recommend staying at least one night.
And if you’re planning an East Coast Scotland road trip, Dundee works perfectly as a stop between Edinburgh and Aberdeen - especially after a few days exploring St Andrews and Fife.
One thing worth knowing before booking is that many hotels in Dundee charge for parking separately, particularly those around the waterfront and city centre. If you’re arriving by car, it’s always worth double-checking parking arrangements in advance, including overnight rates, nearby car parks, and whether spaces need to be reserved.
That said, Dundee is a very walkable city once you arrive, so you likely won’t need to use your car much during your stay.
Dundee Hotels & Apartments
Below are some of our favourite places to stay in Dundee, whether you’re looking for a stylish hotel, spa break, or apartment stay.
Apex City Quay Hotel & Spa
If you’re looking for a reliable, comfortable hotel in a central location, the Apex City Quay Hotel & Spa is one of the best all-round options in Dundee. Sitting beside City Quay and only a short walk from the V&A, the station, and Dundee’s waterfront, it works particularly well for first-time visitors wanting to explore on foot. Rooms are modern and spacious, and many overlook the water.
There’s also an onsite spa, swimming pool, restaurant, and a very stylish bar and lounge area that makes it easy to settle in for the evening.
It is a little more luxurious than some of Dundee’s other hotels, so prices can run slightly higher - but honestly, we think the facilities, atmosphere, and overall experience more than justify the spend. It’s particularly good for couples wanting a relaxed city break without needing to leave the hotel the moment they check in.
For us, the extra-large rooms, along with the chance to relax in the sauna and steam room, make this a real winner.
Hotel Indigo Dundee
Hotel Indigo feels like one of the hotels that perfectly reflects modern Dundee: stylish, creative, and rooted in the city’s history. Set within a former jute mill, the interiors nod to Dundee’s industrial heritage while still feeling boutique and contemporary.
The rooms are beautifully designed, with lots of rich textures, dark tones, and thoughtful details throughout. It’s also home to Daisy Tasker, one of the city’s most popular restaurants for brunch, dinner, and cocktails.
Staybridge Suites Dundee
For longer stays, road trips, or anyone wanting more space, Staybridge Suites is one of the best options in Dundee. We stayed here recently, and loved both the location (close to the centre but away from the buzz) and the extra amenities.
The apartment-style suites include small kitchens, seating areas, and workspace setups, making them ideal if you prefer a slower pace of travel or plan to stay for several nights. The design still feels stylish and modern, and the location near the waterfront keeps you close to Dundee’s main attractions.
One of the things we love most about this stay is the building itself.
The hotel sits inside the beautifully restored Lower Dens Mill, a former 19th-century jute and linen mill that once formed part of Dundee’s industrial heart. Throughout the property, you’ll still notice original features like exposed brickwork, iron beams, and industrial-style interiors that nod to the city’s textile heritage while still feeling warm and contemporary.
The Clarendon
The Clarendon offers something a little quieter and more personal than Dundee’s larger hotels. This small boutique guesthouse-style stay sits in the West End near the vibey Perth Road, one of the prettiest parts of the city, close to cafés, restaurants, and the university quarter.
Rooms feel elegant and individually designed, with a more relaxed, home-like atmosphere throughout. It’s a lovely option if you prefer character stays over larger chain hotels.
Malmaison Dundee
Nestled within Dundee’s historic 1900s railway hotel near the station, Malmaison boasts one of the city’s prime locations for a weekend getaway.
The historic building exudes character, complemented by its signature moody interiors, plush velvet textures, and boutique ambience. Despite its rich history, the interior reflects a modern, 21st-century vibe filled with theatrical glamour typical of Malmaison.
Its central setting is ideal, with the Malmaison Bar & Grill serving modern British cuisine and fostering a vibrant gathering spot for guests and locals alike.
Some rooms offer views of the Tay River, and the hotel is just a short walk from the V&A, waterfront, and main shopping districts. It’s especially perfect for couples looking for a chic city retreat, with a lively bar and restaurant on the premises.
