Where to Eat in Inveraray: The Best Restaurants, Cafes & Seafood
Argyll / Inveraray
I can think of countless reasons to visit Inveraray, one of our favourite small towns in Argyll. But over the years, it’s the food scene that has kept drawing us back just as much as the lochside setting, historic streets, and Highland charm.
For a town of its size, the selection of restaurants and cafés in Inveraray is genuinely impressive, particularly if you love fresh seafood, cosy cafés, and relaxed Scottish dining with a local focus.
Having visited Inveraray multiple times over the years, we’ve gradually built up a list of places we return to every single time.
Some are wonderfully simple seafood shacks serving scallops fresh from the boat, while others offer elegant tasting menus, speciality coffee, or long pub lunches with local ales and whisky beside the fire.
What makes eating in Inveraray so memorable is how closely many of these places are connected to the surrounding landscape - Loch Fyne seafood appears across menus throughout town, and local produce is celebrated wherever possible.
From oysters overlooking the loch to cosy cafés and creative modern Scottish cooking, these are our favourite places to eat in Inveraray.

Where to eat in Inveraray
Ocho
For something a little more stylish, Ocho brings a modern Scottish edge to Inveraray’s dining scene. We were instantly taken with how elegant the space feels; somewhere between a cosy little bistro and a chic contemporary café, with warm lighting, beautifully plated dishes, and an atmosphere that encourages you to slow down and linger.
This is our favourite place to eat in Inveraray, and if we had one regret, it was not ordering more plates!
The menu changes with the seasons, thoughtfully curated around fresh local produce, with Scottish seafood playing a starring role throughout much of the year.
During the day, there’s a relaxed lunch offering built around creative sandwiches and contemporary small plates designed for sharing. We split a fresh cucumber salad alongside crispy croquettes, both simple in concept but elevated with clever flavour combinations and careful presentation.
In the evening, Ocho shifts into a more refined experience, offering both seafood and vegan tasting menus that showcase the kitchen’s creativity and attention to detail.
The food here feels genuinely passionate and inventive without ever becoming overly complicated; beautifully balanced dishes that are as memorable as they are visually striking.

The George
A long-standing favourite in the heart of town, the restaurant inside The George Hotel is one of Inveraray’s most dependable spots for hearty food, local drinks, and a warm Highland atmosphere.
There’s a cosy, traditional feel throughout, with roaring fires in cooler months and a lively buzz that draws both visitors and locals alike.
The menu focuses on crowd-pleasing Scottish favourites, with dishes like fresh seafood, burgers, steaks, fish and chips, and comforting pub classics all featuring heavily.
Ingredients are locally sourced where possible, and the kitchen does a good job of balancing generous portions with quality produce. Behind the bar, you’ll find local craft beers from Loch Fyne Ales alongside an impressive whisky selection that includes a number of unique and harder-to-find bottles.
It’s also arguably the best place in town for an evening drink. The whisky menu alone is worth browsing, while the outdoor garden terrace becomes one of Inveraray’s loveliest spots on sunny summer afternoons.

Inveraray Seafood Shack
No visit to Inveraray would feel complete without sampling the seafood the town is so well known for, and Inveraray Seafood Shack is easily one of the best places to do exactly that.
Sitting right along the promenade, this brilliant shack is easily one of the best places to eat in Inveraray, serving fresh, locally landed seafood with very little fuss and a lot of flavour.
The perfectly grilled, buttery scallops are an absolute standout. Served in their shells and cooked simply, they allow the seafood's freshness to speak for itself. The Loch Fyne oysters are equally impressive, while the langoustine lollipop claws are completely worth ordering.
Part of what makes the experience feel so special is the passion behind it. The two owners (Claudio and Ivan) head out each morning on their own boat to haul in much of the day’s catch before returning to serve it straight from the shack just hours later.
There’s something wonderfully authentic about eating seafood this fresh while overlooking the loch itself. Expect queues on sunny afternoons, particularly in summer, but it’s more than worth the wait.

Brambles & Campbell Coffee
For something more relaxed, Brambles is a lovely spot for coffee, brunch, or a light lunch in the centre of town.
The atmosphere is cosy and welcoming, with a menu built around crowd-pleasing favourites ranging from fresh pastries and cakes to hearty full Scottish breakfasts, soups, sandwiches, and simple lunch dishes. It’s the kind of place that works just as well for a slow morning coffee as it does for a casual lunch stop between exploring Inveraray.
Just across the road, sister café Campbell Coffee is perfect if you’re after a quick takeaway coffee. Small and modern, it’s a handy little stop for quality coffee and pastries on the go.

Loch Fyne Oyster Bar
Located just outside town, Loch Fyne Oyster Bar offers a whole different seafood experience, perfect for a long lunch or leisurely evening meal overlooking the loch.
Seafood naturally takes centre stage here, with platters of oysters, langoustines, mussels, and other fresh catches from Loch Fyne featured throughout the menu.
While it works beautifully as a sit-down dinner spot, we actually love visiting earlier in the evening for something more casual; a plate of freshly shucked oysters paired with crispy fries and a glass of wine is hard to beat.
The restaurant also has a small deli and shop attached, ideal for picking up smoked salmon, seafood pâtés, or other local produce to take away if you’re continuing your travels through Argyll.
